Dr. Frank Whitfield Canon III Dr. Canon, age 93, died at Stanly Medical Regional Center on June 16, 2009. He was born in Senatobia, MS to the late Jessie Griffis McCormack Canon McCulloch and Frank Whitfield Canon, Jr. on August 5, 1915 and he was raised in the Mississippi Delta. Dr. Canon graduated from Chamberlain-Hunt Academy, Port Gibson, MS., Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS, and Auburn University School of Veterinarian Medicine. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Order while at Mississippi State. Dr. Canon is survived by his wife, Georgia Anis Smith Canon, son Frank McCormack Canon and wife Susan Thomas, daughter Georgia Anne Canon Mohr and husband Robert John âBobâ and grandsons Robert âBobbyâ Montgomery Mohr, John Whitfield Mohr, Andrew Frank Canon, Thomas McCormack Canon. He is also survived by step-granddaughter Elizabeth Hellinger and step-grandson Jonathan Flood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepfather Montgomery Forrester McCulloch, son Montgomery Whitfield âMontyâ Canon and granddaughter Jessie McCormack Canon. Dr. Canon practiced veterinary medicine for twenty years in Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Salisbury, North Carolina. Later, he was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture as an inspector in charge of poultry and meat inspection. He retired in 1984. Whitfield was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder and was a Sunday school teacher. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, an avid golfer and bridge player. Also, he was an active member of the YMCA; he delivered âMeals-on-Wheelsâ and visited the local nursing homes. The family expresses deep appreciation to the nursing staff on the fourth floor of Stanly Regional Medical Center and Hospice. The family will receive friends Friday, June 19th, 2009 at 7:00 â 9:00 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. The service will be held on Saturday, June 20th, 2009 at 4:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church. The family meeting place is at his home, 136 N. 3rd Street, Albemarle.
