Fred Wayne Pinion

November 16, 1932 — March 16, 2025

Concord

Fred Wayne Pinion, Sr., 92, of Concord, NC died Sunday, March 16, 2025 at the Hospice Tucker House in Concord.

Fred was born on November 16, 1932 to the late James Claude Pinion and Lurier Jordan Pinion in Salisbury, NC.

He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Boxer (CV-21) off the coast of Korea where he served as a Hospital Corpsman Second Class. He loved telling his stories of his service to anyone that would listen.

The family will have a private burial on Friday, March 21, 2025 at Carolina Memorial Park.

Fred was preceded in death by his son in-law Stewart Hill.

Survivors include his wife Harriet Pinion of Concord, NC; three sons, Chuck Pinion (Tina) of Lexington, SC, David Pinion (Lea) of Cumming, GA, and Fred Pinion, Jr. (Jennifer) of Greenville, SC; two daughters Deena Hill of Concord, NC, and Wendy Lucas (John) of Concord, NC.

He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Bradley Pinion (Kristen), Elisabeth Berry (Dave), Jake Hill (Jenna), Allison Smith (Dustin), Erin McDonald (Tyler), Lauren Agee (Will), Megan Gregory (Josh), Garren Pinion (Bryan Mitchell), Madison Pinion, Jenny Pinion, Benjamin Lucas, and Matthew Lucas.

Fred was blessed to live to have 11 great grandchildren: Charlie, Abbigail, Tucker, Margaret Ann, Michael, Levi, Eli, Warner, DJ, Grey, and Owen.

After his family, Fred’s love for the game of golf comes in a close second. He has been an avid golfer for the majority of his 92 years. He loved playing golf with his buddies and sharing the game with his sons and grandsons.

Fred Pinion made fiberglass his life's work. He became an expert in the intricate weavings of this fabric. His career in fiberglass began with Burlington Mills. He later moved his family to Anderson, SC where he worked for Hexcel Schwebel Fiberglass for more than 25 years. After retiring at 72, Fred began to consult with Bedford Weaving in Virginia where he met his boss/buddy Mark Garbarini. This 15 year friendship was often the highlight of his week.

His grandchildren would describe their Papa as fun, loving, and always glad to see them. I think most people he met would agree. He left a big hole in his family and the world included.

Fred would probably agree with this quote about golf:

"Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots -- but you have to play the ball where it lies."

The family will be at the home of their mother Harriet Pinion.

Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Pinion family.
