Garren Washington Clontz, Sr., 90, formerly of Fairview, NC, passed away Thursday, October 20 at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, S. C. Mr. Clontz was born March 30, 1921 in Union County, N. C. to the late Banks Alexander Clontz and Ottie Pigg Clontz. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Mae Benton Clontz in August of 2007; a son, Barry L. Clontz; and a daughter, Ellen Clontz Costello. Mr. Clontz served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army from 1943 – 1945. While in service he received the Bronze Service Star, Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After service he worked as shop foreman for Continental Trailways in Charlotte. The graveside service for Mr. Clontz will be at 2:30, Sunday, Oct. 23, at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Danny Pierce. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the interment. At other times, friends and family are welcome to pay their respects at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland anytime Saturday or Sunday prior to the service. Survivors include a son, G. W. Clontz, Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Norwood; daughters, Myra C. Bumgarner and her husband, Jim, of Darlington, S. C. and Gay C. Flowe and her husband, Art, of Fairview; grandchildren, Amy C. Robinson, David Clontz, Jonathan Bumgarner, Mandy Smith, Josh Flowe, Heather Allen, Candice Clontz, Melissa Clontz; step-grandchildren, Teresa Smith, Kent Bumgarner and Brent Bumgarner; a number of great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Helms of Charlotte. He and his wife also had many foster children that they loved as their own. The family would like to thank the staff of ElmCroft of Florence, SC, especially to Janie and also for the loving care that Mr. Clontz received from Harmony Care Hospice especially to Zonnie, Donna, Stacy, and Lisa.
