A 1983 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he worked as an accountant until he began flying as a professional pilot 7 years ago.

Gary was Cubmaster of Pack 38 for five years, during which many young people got their first taste of leadership. Always a little boy at heart, he loved the chaos of Pack meetings and especially camping. He'd lead groups the size equivalent of four classrooms' of little boys in their first taste of outdoor living.

He thrived on outdoorsmanship, sports and flying. He especially loved hiking, and he often took opportunities to hike in areas he might visit on his professional flights. The more difficult and steep the terrain, the better he liked it. He gave swim lessons at the YMCA from 2010-2012, and was assistant coach of the JM Robinson High School Swim Team for that time period. He also helped with summer swim leagues and Sailfish Aquatics at the YMCA through the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club through 2012.

He was passionate about flying, and earned his pilot's license in under a year back in the1990s with the complexities of map reading and analog instrumentation. He got the flying bug from his dad, who owned a small plane when Gary was a boy. He flew Pilatus airplanes for DaVinci Jets in addition to other small aircraft. He was a certified flight instructor, and was a gifted teacher according to his peers and students. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol's local Airwing NC-121, and he donated time to Pilot Airlift Services,or PALS, a group that provides flight services for people in medical need at no cost to the patient. He also flew for the local jump school on occasion, and had been in training to compete in aerobatics at the time of his death.

Another passion of Gary's was cycling. He first joined the Hearts Cycling Team of Winston-Salem in his teens. He was very active in bicycle racing most of his adult life and remained actively cycling several times a week throughout his life. He won the State Championship Criterium in 2011, in addition to many other races. He was also instrumental in supporting the construction and activities of the Rock Hill Velodrome.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Burke County EMS/Search and Rescue Department.

Donations in his memory may be made to PALS www.palservices.org.
