Gary Sells

Gary Douglas Sells, beloved husband, father and friend, died Friday, January 31, 2014 after a brief illness at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord. Gary was born July 29, 1937 in Richfield to the late Carl Samuel Sells and the late Edna Theonia Culp Sells. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his infant son, Charles Edwards Sells; brother, Carl Galen Sells, and his sister and brother-in-law, Janette and Earl Sides. Gary was a graduate of Richfield High School and was a proud veteran of the National Guard. He worked as a supervisor at Cannon Mills and later Wiscassett Mills for 45 years. In addition, he worked his family farm his entire life where he enjoyed tending his black angus cattle. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Matton's Grove Methodist Church. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Tony Bowman and Rev. Dana McKim will follow at 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 8, 2014. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, 24732 Matton's Grove Church Road, Gold Hill, NC. Gary was a lifelong member of Matton's Grove UMC. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 51 years, Joan Westbrook Sells, with whom he loved to travel, including trips to Europe and the American West to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. His son, Douglas Sells of Richfield; daughters, Sharlina Honeycutt and husband, Larry of Locust, Sabrina Stephens and husband, Kent of Wilmington and Selina Jarvis and husband, Steve of Harbinger, NC; grandchildren, Elisabeth, Riley and Zach Honeycutt, Sam and Carl Stephens, and Tucker and Connor Jarvis; and sister in law, Sue Sells, survive to cherish his memory as well as a host of other family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations, in Gary's memory be made to Matton's Grove United Methodist Church or to Matton's Grove Historic Church Restoration Fund, PO Box 589, Misenheimer, NC 28109.
