George Kenneth Agardi, 95, of Midland, NC and West Sayville, NY, died on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.
Mr. Agardi was born April 17, 1926 in Manhattan to Gabor and Rose Toth Agardi. The youngest of four children, he was raised in Ronkonkama, NY, and later moved his own family to the south shore of Long Island.
Mr. Agardi was an avid outdoorsman with a love of fishing, hunting, canoeing, and exploring the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY. He spent the whole of his professional career teaching high school marine biology and coaching track & field, and he took tremendous joy in seeing his students succeed in both. He was intentional in sharing his love of science and the sea with his children and grandchildren, inspiring their own pursuits in science and outdoor careers.
Mr. Agardi was an accomplished artist, painting images of his beloved mountains, and carving and selling hundreds of life-like ducks and birds in his lifetime. He also enjoyed writing, and penned thousands of poems and short stories, most of which went to his grandchildren as they grew up. He was gregarious, charming, and beloved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Helen, Liz and Gabe, and his wife of 66 years, Mary Martha.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane Agardi Powell and Dennis Powell; his granddaughter, Dr. Rebecca Powell Doherty; his grandsons, Craig Agardi and Ryan Powell; his four great grandchildren; and numerous extended family.
Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland is serving the Agardi family.
