George Wesley Philemon, 91 years of age, of Oakboro, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017 at his home in Oakboro.
George was born July 6, 1925 in Union County to the late William Clarence Philemon and the late Martha Jane Edwards Philemon.
He was also preceded in death by wife, Louise Almond Philemon, 1998.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm, Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be on Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle officiated by Rev. Jeff Springer. Burial will follow at the Stanly Gardens of Memory at 2001 East Main St., Albemarle, with full military honors.
The body will lie in state at Hartsell Funeral Home Albemarle Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm and on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, from 8:30 am until time of service.
Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn (Jr.) Curlee of Locust; son, Sherron (Christy) Philemon of Mount Holly; brother, Boyce Philemon of New London; granddaughter, Tonya (Shon) Arrowood; grandsons, Daniel (Amelia) Philemon and William Philemon; great-grandchildren, Andrew Arrowood, Ashley Arrowood, Isaac Philemon.
A WWII veteran of the US Army, George was the last prisoner of war survivor from Stanly County. He was also a member of Big Lick Baptist Church.
