Gerald Douglas Lindsey, age 80, passed away at his home at the Taylor Glen Retirement Community in Concord, NC on Sunday, March 25, 2018. His wife of 56 years, Beth Napier Lindsey, was by his side.
Gerry was born in Columbia, TN to Eldon (Toby) McCoy Lindsey and Catherine Cagle Lindsey. He grew up in Columbia, graduating from Columbia High School in 1955 as salutatorian of his class. He attended Georgia Tech University, where he played baseball as a pitcher, and graduated as an industrial engineer in 1961.
He worked at the Air Force Base in Warner Robbins, Georgia and was called to Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he served in the Army for a time.
Gerry was employed at Marshall Space Flight Center at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama as an engineer for several years, before returning with his wife to his home town of Columbia, TN. There he taught drafting classes at Columbia State Community College , while also working as a realtor and home builder. Through hard work and perseverance, Gerry built his contracting business in Columbia and became a well-respected businessman in the community. He retired in 2002, and a year later Gerry and Beth moved to North Carolina to be near their children and grandchildren.
Always known for his generosity and love for family, Gerry worked diligently to provide for his family. He loved to travel, and especially enjoyed cruising with his wife, family, and friends. Having been a college pitcher, he enjoyed both playing and watching sports, and played on his church softball team well into his sixties. Videotaping his wife, children and grandchildren was a favorite pastime of Gerry's. Gerry loved the Lord, and served at church in the production department as a cameraman. Gerry and Beth are members at Pitts Baptist Church in Concord, NC.
Gerry is survived by his beloved wife Beth Napier Lindsey of Concord, NC, one daughter, Lee Ann Lindsey Hopkins (Mark) of Concord, NC, one son, Keith Douglas Lindsey (Christine) of Simpsonville, SC, along with five grandchildren: Bethany Hopkins Giesler, (Garrett), Lindsey Hopkins, Cameron Lindsey (Kara Jeanne), Connor Lindsey, Kara Lindsey, and two great-grandsons, Josiah Giesler, Ezra Giesler.
He is also survived by brothers Jim Lindsey (Lynn), David Lindsey (Theresa), and sister Vicki Lindsey. He is preceded in death by his brother Danny Lindsey. He is also survived by his Aunt Catherine Lindsey Bolton.
Hartsell Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements, which will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 with visitation from 12:00-1:00 pm and the service at 1:00 pm at Pitts Baptist Church in Concord, NC. Pastor Scott Davis will preside over the memorial service.
