Geraldine Whitley

May 17, 1927 — August 13, 2016

The world lost a kind and honest spirit with the passing of Geraldine Frances Brattain Whitley, 89 years of age, of Red Cross, NC Saturday, August 13, 2016.

Jerry, as she was known to friends and co-workers, was a gentle and generous soul. Geraldine was born in Mecklenburg County in 1927 the second daughter of five sisters and one brother, graduating from Oakboro High School in 1944. The graduation came at a tumultuous time, toward the end of World War II. Dressed in a homemade evening gown, Geraldine shared her musical talent and her soul with the community, singing, "God Bless My Darling, He is Somewhere". There wasn't a dry eye. Her dedication to her country led her to Washington, DC where she worked in Army Intelligence for the remainder of the war. In 1946, Geraldine married F. Craven Whitley and they had one child, Lloyd Yudale Whitley. Her husband passed away in 1985 and the child in 1947.

She is survived by one sister, Bobbie Kay Brattain Thompson and brother, Daniel W. Brattain, Jr. along with numerous nieces and nephews. Co-workers at Associated Transport and Modern Office Supply knew Jerry as a sharp-witted, down-to-earth, dependable co-worker. She was a member of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Active and energetic, Geraldine was at home on the water, boating and skiing at Lake Norman. After moving from Charlotte back to Stanly County after the passing of her husband, Geraldine had a wonderful garden, full of flowers. Raised on a farm, Geraldine truly loved animals, as well, always with a pet dog or cat, and once a parrot. Her friends and family will remember her generous spirit, the crocheted afghans in each baby bed, flowers at the Brattain reunions, her honesty and her unwavering love.

Geraldine's life will be celebrated at a graveside service Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 2 PM at Providence Church of God, 12474 NC 24/27 Locust, officiated by Rev. Josh Fraley.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Stanly County and the Uwharrie for their support at the end of her life.
