H. Austin Sauls Jr., a long time resident of Albemarle passed away, Friday September 12th following a brief illness. The son of H. A. and Helen Sauls, Mr. Sauls was born December 2, 1920 in Winston Salem, N.C., where he grew up with his younger sister, Ann. Like so many men of his generation, he interrupted his college education to serve his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Army Air Core in 1946 after serving as an aircraft mechanic in California. He then resumed his education at North Carolina State University earning a degree in textile engineering. Mr. Sauls had a long career in the textile industry spending most of that career working for Collins & Aikman in Albemarle. After retiring from Collins & Aikman, he pursued a second career in real estate with Russ Hollins Century 21 Realtors. After retiring for the second time, he moved to the Gardens of Taylor Glen in Concord, NC with his wife, Margaret to enjoy their twilight years. An active member of the Albemarle community, Mr. Sauls served as a scout master, was a member of the Rotary Club, and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Sauls is survived by his wife, Margaret, his son Harvin A. Sauls III and daughter-in-law, Ann Sauls of Gastonia, his stepson and daughter-in-law Robert and Myra Land of Albemarle, and stepdaughter Jean Bryland of Raleigh. He is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grand children. A celebration of Mr. Sauls’ life was held in the Taylor Glen chapel on Sunday with a private interment at Stanley Gardens of Memory to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Mr. Sauls’ honor be made to First Presbyterian Church or the Arts Council of Stanley County.
