Henry Elbert Hopkins, 91, of Albemarle, passed away October 9, 2021. He was born May 30, 1930 in Albemarle where he was a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Ferrell Hopkins. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, wife of 73 years, Verla Mae Hopkins and sister Angeline Hopkins Davis.

Mr. Hopkins is survived by a niece, Sharon Hill Rhodes (Tim) of Asheville and two great nephews, Tyler and Michael Rhodes of Nashville, Tennessee. He is also survived by nephew, Tommy Hill (Beth) and niece, Stephanie Hughes and other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hopkins was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving in the US Army from 1952 through 1954. He later was employed by Wiscassett Mills (#1) from 1957 to 1967. In 1992, Mr. Hopkins retired from the City of Albemarle Police Department with 25 years service attaining the rank of Assistant Chief.

Mr. Hopkins loved every minute he spent with his wife Verla and enjoyed all the heart warming times he spent with his niece and nephews over the years. Mr. Hopkins was a gifted storyteller and many days were enjoyed by his nephews sitting around the living room hearing stories of his Korean War and law enforcement experiences. Mr. Hopkins especially cherished the friendships and bonds that he formed with his colleagues in law enforcement. He will always be remembered as a very loyal, loving husband and uncle to his family and a dedicated, loyal professional in the field of law enforcement.

The family of Mr. Hopkins would like to especially thank caretakers Cindy Mauney, Shelia Rich and other caretakers who provided love, care, friendship and support to Mr. Hopkins over the past few months. The family would also like to thank the staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living and Hospice of Stanly County.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Mr. Hopkins life will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. Officers of the Albemarle Police Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made in Mr. Hopkins memory to the Albemarle Police Association (Attn: Anita Almond) P.O.
