Hubert Lee Hatley, 98 years of age, of Oakboro, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast in Concord.
Mr. Hatley was born May 29, 1918 in Stanly County to the late Reuben Lemuel Hatley and the late Dora Elizabeth Green Hatley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Elizabeth Thomas Hatley in 2002 as well as his sisters, Velma Sasser, Fay Burris, and Carrie Mae Morton; and brothers, Claude, Roy, Reuben, Clyde, Wilson and Wade Hatley.
Mr. Hatley was a World War II veteran of the United States Army and was awarded the Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. As a Private First Class, he served as an Anti Tank Gun Crewman in the 326th Glider Infantry/3rd Battalion from July 15, 1943 to January 30, 1946 in Central Europe.
He loved beekeeping, gardening and painting houses, and was a retired supervisor at American and Efird Mills after over 38 years of service. As long as his health permitted, Hubert faithfully attended Big Lick Baptist Church and was a member since age 14.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Big Lick Baptist Church at 626 Big Lick Road in Oakboro. The funeral service will follow in the church sanctuary at 4:00 PM officiated by Rev. Jeff Springer. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
Survivors include sons, Larry Lee (Joan) Hatley, Kenneth Wayne Hatley, and Tony Glenn (Kathy) Hatley all of Oakboro; granddaughters, Leslie (Chris) Hatley-Murray and Jennifer (Paul) Hatley Polzin; and great grandson, Noah Lee Polzin.
