Hugh Morrison “Sandy” Black, 89, of Concord, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Horizon Bay of Concord. Sandy was born August 29, 1923, in Cabarrus County, to the late William W. and Blanche B. Black. In addition to his parents, Mr. Black was preceded in death by his sister, Helen L. Black and two brothers, Eugene H. Black and Harold D. Black. He is survived by his; sister, Edna B. Cline of Concord; nephew, David Black of Concord and nieces Janice Black Utt of Maryville, TN, Catherine Anne Black Thomas of Atlanta, GA, Kay Black Davis of Kannapolis and Anita Cline of Concord and ten great nieces and nephews. Sandy served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in New Guinea and Japan. Following the war, he returned to Concord where he operated Black’s Exxon in downtown Concord, for 38 years, from 1954 to 1992. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013 from 4 to 6pm at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. The funeral service will be held at Mount Hermon Lutheran Church, 3600 Hwy 601 South, Concord, NC 28025, Monday, March 4, 2013 at 12:30pm with Pastor Carrie Bishop officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church beginning at 11:30am. Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund at Mount Hermon Lutheran Church or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Ln., Kannapolis, NC 28081.
