Hurley Harwood

Hurley Lonze Harwood, age 92, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at his home, with his family by his side. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM. The funeral service will be at 4 PM on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Paul Pickler and Rev. George Stallings officiating. The burial will follow at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, with military honors conducted by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter 12. At other times, the family will meet at the home of his son, Matthew Harwood, 16553 Capra Lane, Mt. Pleasant, 704-983-8834. Mr. Harwood was born in Stanly County on May 5, 1919, to the late Luther B. Harwood, Sr. and the late Loretta Crayton Harwood. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Dick Harwood; three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by five sons, Phillip Anthony Harwood, Joey Hurley Harwood, Larry James Harwood and Randy Lee Harwood, all of Mt. Pleasant and Randy Lee Harwood of Norwood; one daughter, Linda Harwood Johnson of Albemarle; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great- great grandchild. Hurley was a good and honest man, who loved his family, and was loved by many. Hurley worked as a pulpwood, lumberjack, as well as a textile mill worker. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Army and proudly served his country during WWII in the 79th Infantry. He earned an Eamet Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, a Bronze Star Medal, and a medal for Good Conduct. Gardening was his favorite pastime, along with hunting and fishing. He loved to dig in the dirt, and pick blueberries and blackberries. Hurley is now God’s gardener. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. First Street, Albemarle, NC 28001. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Harwood family.
