James "Plowboy" Ira Bowers, 90, of Norwood, passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at Bethany Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Albemarle.
Plowboy was born September 12, 1926 in Stanly County to Ira Clarence Bowers and Pauline Hattie Thompson Bowers. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bill and Ernest Bowers; sister, Mary Elizabeth Byrd; and one grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Memorial Baptist Church, 873 Pee Dee Ave., Norwood. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the church sanctuary, officiated by Rev. Nathan Fox and Rev. Josh Phillips. The burial will be at Norview Gardens, 949 Pee Dee Avenue, Norwood, with military honors conducted by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter #12. At other times, the family will be meeting at the home of his son, Kent Bowers, 12530 Cottonville Rd., Norwood.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Kathleen Poplin Bowers of the home; sons, Donald Bowers and wife Betty of Norwood, Gary Bowers and wife Sharon of Hickory, Kent Bowers and wife Renae of Norwood, NC; sister-in-law, Betty Bowers of Albemarle; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Plowboy was known for being a hard worker, tough negotiator, and always had a joke. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during WWII, and was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church in Norwood. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Plowboy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
