James "Jim" Lee Coley, 93, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Morningside Assisted Living of Concord. Jim was born on October 26, 1924, in Cabarrus County, NC, to the late Maggie Amanda Jones Coley and Oscar Raymond Coley, Sr. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served during World War II. He was sworn into the Navy on July 4, 1942, and Honorably Discharged on October 24, 1945. He served as the flight engineer aboard a Mariner/Marlin amphibious plane that searched for and destroyed enemy submarines lurking in the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans. He was a member of Squadron V.P.B. - 204 and was stationed in Colon, Panama at the end of the war. After his years in service, Jim worked as a carpenter, having built his own home. Jim began his career as a Policeman with the City of Concord and later hired as a Deputy for Cabarrus County. He retired as a Lieutenant having served his county for over 35 years. He was the oldest living retired Deputy at the time of his death. He was very proud of his service to both his country and community. Jim was a member of First Baptist Church, Concord. He was also a member of The Cabarrus County Law Enforcement Officer's Association, North Carolina Retired Peace Officers Association, WWII VS-36 & VS1-D4 Mariner/Marlin Association and Stokes #32 Masonic Lodge, Concord.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Frances Lomax Coley, sisters; Helen Alexander and Mae Lambert; brothers, D. W "Doc" Coley, Oscar Coley, David Coley, Robert Coley and Harold Coley. He is survived by a sister, Nancy Mayer (Bob) of Charlotte,NC. He is also survived by three daughters; Linda Coley Sims (Jimmy) of Trinity, NC; Cynthia Coley Heintz (Larry) and Deborah Coley Cagle (Mike), of Concord, NC.; seven grandchildren: Dale Sims (Patrice) of Zebulon, NC; Laurie McWhirter (Tony) of Trinity, NC; Kenneth Sims of High Point, NC; Larry Brian Heintz (Lisa), and Jeffrey Heintz (Christy) of Concord, NC; Lindsay Cagle of Belmont, NC; Ashlyn Cagle of Kannapolis, NC; and five great-grandchildren.
Jim's visitation will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home on Monday, May 14, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM with the funeral to follow at 3:00 PM. Officiating at the funeral will be Rev. Dr. William Nix and Rev. Robert Leonard. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
