Biography James Alfred Estridge, 92, of Midland, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017.
Al was born August 15, 1924 in Mecklenburg County. He was the son of the late Oscar Wilson Estridge and the late Geneva Pearl Carpenter Estridge.
Al served during World War II in the European Theater as a member of the U. S. Army's Fourth Armored Division, earning the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. He returned home in 1946 and married his high school sweetheart, Letha Joyner, on December 24, 1947, in Charlotte, N. C. They were married for fifty-nine years before she passed away in 2006.
Al worked for Thomas & Howard Company for forty-five years. He was a longtime member of St. John's Baptist Church and the Durden Sunday School Class. He was also a member of American Legion Post 433 in Midland, N. C.
Al enjoyed fishing, golfing, and gardening. He loved sharing his tomatoes with family and friends. As a WWII veteran, he was honored to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D. C. and the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. Al was a loving dad, granddad, and great-granddad. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Al is survived by his daughter, Scarlett Funderburk and husband, Toby; his son, Philip Estridge and wife, Sheila; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Archie Joyner; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Joyner.
A graveside service to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2017, at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte. Graveside military honors will be presented by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 5, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland and also after the service.
