James O. Smith, Jr., 66, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012 at his home in Locust. Mr. Smith was born February 28, 1946 in Winnsboro, S. C. to the late James Otis Smith, Sr. and the late Edna Estelle Milling Smith. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and also worked as a machinist for most of his career until he retired from General Electric. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. The funeral service will be at 11:00, Wednesday, with a 30 minute state prior to the service, at Friendship Baptist Church, 9360 Oak Grove Road, Stanfield. Rev. Clint Lewey will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be presented by Stanly County Chapter 12 DAV. The family will meet at Lane Hall in Stanfield after the service. At other times, the family will meet at his home. Survivors include his wife, Linda Lane Smith, of the home; his sons, James A. Smith of Belmont, Jody R. Smith and his wife, Jennifer, of Gastonia, Jason R. Smith and his wife, Melisa, of Stanfield, and Adam R. Garris and his wife, Kristi, of Graham; his daughters, Jeannie Lynn Hartley of Monroe, Lisa G. Dixon of Mt. Holly, and Heather S. Hartsell and her husband, James, of Stanfield; his brothers, Alfred Smith of New Jersey, Marvin and Tommy Smith of N. C.; his sisters, Pat Avery, Diane Shoup, and Jean Smith of N. C.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
