James Tucker

February 16, 1929 — March 9, 2015

Feb. 16, 1929 - March 9, 2015

James Alfred Tucker, 86, of Albemarle, died March 9, 2015 at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
He was a 42 year career employee and crew supervisor in the Albemarle office of the NC Department of Transportation, Road Oil (paving and maintenance) Division, retiring in 1991.

James was the second child of Eliza Hathcock and J. Sam Tucker of Oakboro. He grew up in Albemarle, worked in auto tire trades, and joined the U.S. Army Airborne 101st Division at Ft. Campbell, KY. His Army training began (in his words describing his first training flight and first airplane flight ever) by “taking off seven times before he ever got to land”. His division prepared in the shadow of the Korean War era, but were never called to the war zone.

A private service for James will be held at Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church where he joins his beloved wife of 47 years, Margaret Gilbert Tucker, who died in 2003. James was also preceded in death by his sister, Eltas Tucker Daughtry of Laurinburg, sister in law Rachel Gilbert Hatley of Albemarle, brother in law Hoyle Gilbert of Charlotte, and niece Deborah Hatley Holbrook of Charleston, SC.

He is survived in the Gilbert family by brother in law Joe Hatley, Sr. of Albemarle, sister in law Carolyn Gilbert of Charlotte, nephews Craig Gilbert of Charlotte, Alan Gilbert and Joe Hatley, Jr. of Albemarle. Tucker and Daughtry family include nephews John Cary (Kay) Daughtry of Charlotte and James Randolph (Molly Davidson) Daughtry of Boston, Mass.

Special remembrance is made for the work teams and friends from James’ years with the NC Department of Transportation Albemarle crews. Especially, those continuing personal support of James during retirement years included Don Gordon (and wife, Carla), Chris Burleson, Mike Almond, Jerry Burleson, and Jim Phillips. The family wishes to thank the medical professionals, nurse Crystal and Dr. Melo-Lizardo of Hope Medical, Dr. Nalin Mehta and nursing staff for Hospice of Stanly County, and the staff of Spring Arbor assisting living, for their patience and dedication to James’ well being and healthcare.

A memorial fund for James A. Tucker has been started with the Stanly Community College Foundation, inspired by his positive influence on young employees of his work crews with the NC Department of Transportation. Both NCDOT career and college bound summer students worked with James on paving and highway construction projects. The scholarship fund will primarily benefit students with the potential and desire to work in skilled trades and civil engineering, beginning with core and technical training at Stanly Community College.

Memorials should be sent to: Stanly Community College Foundation, James Tucker Scholarship Fund, 141 College Drive, Albemarle, NC 28001, or the charity of your choice.

Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Tucker family.
