James "Cooter" Smith

James "Cooter" Cephus Smith, 67, of Charlotte, passed away Monday, January 27, 2020.

James was born August 10, 1952 in Stanly County to the late Albert Sidney Smith and the late Eunice Ellen Blackwelder Smith.  He was also preceded in death by brothers, Victor James Smith and Ted Smith; and sister, Della Casper.

James retired from Whaley's Food Service in Charlotte.  He was a very loving husband, father, brother and Paw Paw.  He always had a very calming demeanor and was very easy-going.  James loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include beloved wife, Berta Smith; daughter, Jessica Cordero and husband, Victor, of Columbia, SC; son, Henry Calderon of Charlotte; son, Edwin Calderon and wife, Mollie, of Charlotte; brother, Joe Smith and wife, Margie, of Concord; sister, Frances Huneycutt of Stanly County; brother, Albert Smith and wife, Mary, of Stanly County; sister, Julia Smith of Concord; sister, Reva Honeycutt and husband, Hugh, of Concord; grandchildren, Miriam Cordero and Edwin Calderon Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland.  The funeral service will be on Friday at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, officiated by Rev. Jody Wetta.  Burial will follow at Running Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, 24671 Millingport Road., Locust.
