Master Sergeant Jeffery Alan Wherry, 49, of Salisbury, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018

Jeffery was born May 20, 1969, to the late William J. Wherry and still Ruth Kee Wherry. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gregory.

Survivors include; his wife of 8 years, Jill; his mother, Ruth; sister, Robin; nephew, Ezekiel; two great-nephews; and a large family of uncles, aunts and cousins.

While in Boy Scout Troop 38 at Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church, Jeff earned his Eagle Scout Award and he was a member of The Order of the Arrow. In addition to Boy Scouts, Jeff enjoyed doing Civil War and Revolutionary reenactments.

MSgt Wherry enlisted in the Air Force on 8 May 1992 and served for six years on active duty before joining the North Carolina Air National Guard. He enlisted in the 263rd Combat Communications Squadron, on 21 June 1998, where he faithfully served as a Radio Frequency Transmission Systems Craftsman for over 20 of 26 years of his outstanding Air Force career. MSgt Wherry was a decorated combat veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Defense Force Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal for his distinguished service while deployed to Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait, Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan, and Ahmed Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait. In addition to his outstanding support to combat operations, MSgt Wherry received the Humanitarian Service Medal for his assistance to the citizens of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and the North Carolina National Guard State Active Duty Service Ribbon for his service to the citizens of North Carolina during multiple hurricanes and natural disasters.

For this, Bradley D. Claxton, Maj, NCANG Commander and Kenneth Overcash, MSgt, both gave moving, heartfelt eulogies from his Air National Guard family.

A Funeral service was held at 10 am, Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church in Concord, NC. Burial followed the service at 1 pm, at Salisbury National Cemetery with full Military honors.
