Jerry Morton Cooper, age 72 of 602 E. Cannon Ave, Albemarle passed away Friday, May 21, 2010 at Stanly Regional Medical Center. Born April 24, 1938 in Mecklenburg County, Jerry graduated from Albemarle High School in 1956 and attended Pfeiffer College. He served in the US Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller. He had a natural passion for flying beginning at an early age, which led to a job as a flight instructor and a career as a corporate pilot. Jerry enjoyed music and was self taught on several instruments, excelling in piano. He loved to play for family, friends, and anyone willing to listen. He was a member of the church choir at Highland Baptist Church in New London. Jerry enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle with family and friends, especially with Wink’s Breakfast Club and Harvey’s Hot Dog Gang. Jerry also had a love of photography. He was an award winning amateur photographer. He lived an active life style and enjoyed the outdoors. Learning and teaching were lifelong passions. Jerry was a member of the Singing Men of America, Experimental Aircraft Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Anson Flying Club. Jerry was preceded in death by his father Draper Walter Cooper, and mother Ruby Catherine Morton Cooper and is survived by his wife, Sybil June Barnhardt Cooper of the home; sons, David Morton Cooper of Pittsburg, PA; Christopher Mark Cooper of Columbus, GA; daughter, Sandra Anne Cooper Kimbrell of Charlotte; sister, Sue Cooper of Charlotte and 10 grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, and Teri Cooper, Coullt, Lane, and Anna Kimbrell, Alex, Cassie, Carlie and Ashley Cooper. Visitation Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service Monday, May 24, 2010 at Highland Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with a 30 minute state. Rev. Paul Crews officiating. Burial will be at the Salisbury National Cemetery and will be scheduled at a later date. The family will meet at his home, 602 East Cannon Ave, Albemarle, NC Military honors graveside by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV Chapter 12.
