Jerry Lee Shurig (83), of Concord, NC, passed away on October 18, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Carole Lynne Kay Shurig, and daughters Lara Shurig (Andy Olah), Melissa Nowakowski (Dave, Macy, and Eden), and Karen Keegan (Jeff, Holden, and Avett).
Jerry, lovingly known as “PaPa” to his 4 grandchildren, was born on January 28, 1941 in Winchester, KY to parents Arthur and Marjorie Shurig. He was an only child. He spent his young childhood years moving between Kentucky, the home of his father’s family, to Columbus County, NC, the home of his mother’s family. Jerry had many fond memories from this time and often shared stories of his childhood. Eventually his family settled in Charlotte, where he grew up. Jerry graduated from Myers Park High School in 1959. He attended Duke University and Eastern Carolina University for a time before being drafted into the US Army. He served in the 3rd armor division from 1965-1967.
When discharged from the Army, Jerry returned to Charlotte and attended UNC-C where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. After college, he worked as an IT project manager for JP Stevens and then Collins and Aikman Corporation where he remained until he retired.
Jerry was passionate about his family and his church, and was a life-long learner with many interests. He was an avid reader and soaked up all the knowledge he could about history and world affairs - especially the Civil War. He had a creative streak which he channeled into woodworking, lovingly crafting everything from furniture to treasured heirlooms. Jerry loved music and the arts. He learned how to play the trumpet in high school and later taught himself to play the guitar. He continued to make music as he got older, frequently playing trumpet in church and for a community band. Jerry spent hours discovering and listening to new and inspiring music, and often personalized compilations to share with loved ones.
Jerry was an active member of his church community, regularly attending weekly services, bible studies and prayer meetings. He looked forward to weekly meetings with close friends where they would enjoy a meal or coffee while discussing scripture.
Most of all Jerry loved his grandchildren. He was always their most enthusiastic supporter at soccer games, band concerts, and theater productions. One of his most treasured pastimes was taking each of them on special outings where he would spoil them. Jerry was happiest when all of his family was together, and he never missed an opportunity to extend a hug let each and every person know just how much he loved them.
To honor Jerry’s memory and celebrate his life, a service will be held at Core Community Church Concord NC on Thursday October 24, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg is serving the Shurig family.
