Jo Ann Christenbury Jones, 83, passed away in her Charlotte home on January 12, 2019 after a brief but intense struggle with salivary gland cancer.
Jo Ann was one of eight brothers and sisters who grew up on their family’s Cabarrus County farm. She married Gene Austin in 1953 shortly after graduating from Odell High School. Widowed in 1990, she married Ernie Jones in 1995. She was a kind, giving, and caring wife, mother, sister, and friend. All who knew her loved her.
She was an active member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church where she served at the annual Barbecue, cooked for the children’s programs, and faithfully attended her circle and Sunday School class.
An avid golfer and member of the Lady’s Golf Association at the Cabarrus Country Club, Jo Ann enjoyed competing with her friends in both regular weekly rounds and in tournaments.
She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Ernie Jones; Ernie’s children Sandy Epting (Jay) and Lisa Oehler (Larry); children, Rick Austin and Beverly Williams (Giles); brothers Paul Christenbury (Frances), Kenneth Christenbury (Suggie), Ted Christenbury (Ila), Jerry Christenbury (Joyce), and Eddy Christenbury (Peggy); sisters Jenna Sue Taylor (Burr) and Sandra Thomas (Darrell); grandchildren, Elizabeth Slater (Nathaniel), Christopher Williams (Karen), Michael Williams, Morgan Whitmore (Tyler), Madison Williams, David Williams, Shannon Epting, Josh Oehler (Lauren), Ryan Oehler (Whitney); great-grandchildren Bailey Williams, Lydia Slater, Calla Oehler, Olivia Oehler, and Hudson Oehler.
A celebration of her life will be held at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 11:00. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forward by Faith campaign at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church.
