Joann Whitley

JoAnn Burrell Whitley, 87, of Albemarle died March 18, 2021, at home surrounded by her family. She was born April 11, 1933, in Georgia.

JoAnn was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She enjoyed travel, art, antiques, literature, music, tennis, and horseback riding with family and friends. She met her true love, Whit, in middle school in Albemarle. They attended Duke University, where she graduated with honors with a double major in English and art history. She passed along her passion for the arts and nature to her family, building a loving home and environment for them to share. JoAnn stood as her husband’s staunchest supporter and steadfast partner in their efforts to contribute to the community through service and philanthropy.

JoAnn is survived by Whit, her husband of 65 years, her two daughters, Alice (Andy) and Leigh Ann (Pat), her brother, Frank (Bobbie), two nieces, Kim and Beth, and nephew, Frank (“Buzz”), and her beloved dog, Tigger.

The family is grateful for the loving caregivers who looked after JoAnn and made her comfortable during a difficult time.

The family will hold a private graveside service with a celebration of JoAnn’s life to follow at a later date.
