Joe Helms, Sr.

Joe Richard Helms, Sr., 77, of Concord, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.

Joe was born March 10, 1945, in Cabarrus County to the late Mary Hudson Helms.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Steven Helms; brothers, Jimmy, Howard and Mutt Helms; sister, Willene Herrin.

Joe was such a hard working man, always making sure to provide for his wife and children.  He never retired.  He'd be working at Safewaze right now, if he could.  He was a lifelong fixer of everything, including cars and anything with an engine.  He enjoyed being at home and spending time with family.  "Ya'll ready to go home?  I gotta work tomorrow."  Joe always called it like he saw it.  He was humble and lived a simple life.  He taught his children to never live above their means too.  "Shut the door.  You're letting money out."  Most of all, Joe was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Dianne Helms of the home; son, Joe Richard (Sonya) Helms, Jr. of Kannapolis, daughter, Deborah Sethna of Concord; seven grandchildren, Lawson (Katherine) Martin, Corey Martin, Alley Helms (fiance, John Oakes), Tanner Sethna, Carson Helms, Peyton Helms, and Alexis Malund; four great-grandchildren, Liam, Bretton, Nora, and Tucker; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm - 2:45 pm, Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord.  The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, officiated by Rev. John Curran.  Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, 471 Church Street, Concord, North Carolina.
