Joe Waddell Mullinax, 94, of Concord, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
Mr. Mullinax was born May 3, 1930, in Caldwell County, North Carolina to the late Massie Taylor Mullinax and the late Corrie Jane Herbert Mullinax. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Rachel Mullinax in 1965; sister, Pawnee Simmons, brother, Mendall Demarkaus Mullinax, brother, Massie Taylor Mullinax, Jr., brother, Thomas Herbert Mullinax, sister, Doris Maxine Mullinax, brother, Dewey Wayne Mullinax, sister, Flossie Church.
At the age of 17 he decided he did not want to work in cotton mills, so he begged his father to take him to Hickory to join the Army. He went to Fort Jackson, SC for his basic training, he then went to Guam and worked as a Chaplain assistant. He was sent to Korea in the early fifties. When he came back to the states, he fell in love with a local girl, Lois Smith, together they had three children. After her sudden passing in Germany, he returned to the states with their three children. After five and a half years, he married Marlene and became a blended family of seven. Joe served on the Cumberland County planning board for thirteen years and loved working for the county. He always had his Roberts Rules of Order with him at the meetings and the lawyers depended on him to tell them if their planning was correct or not.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Spring Lake for forty-five years. He also sang in the choir with his beautiful, tenor voice. After forty-five years he decided that their hometown was going downhill so they decided to move to Concord, NC and joined Pitts Baptist Church in 2005. They have thanked God every day for that decision. He often said that these were his happiest days.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 am - 11:45 am, Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Pitts Baptist Church-Concord. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm in the sanctuary of Pitts Baptist Church-Concord and be officiated by Rev Scott Davis and burial will follow in the Pitts Baptist Church Cemetery, Concord.
Survivors include wife, Marlene Mullinax of Concord, sons, Michael J. Mullinax (Laura), of Charlotte, Terry L. Mullinax (Janet), of Charlotte, Randall W. Rice (Martha), of Hickory, daughters, Anita (Katie) Goodwin, of Louisville, KY, Cheryl R. Trafton (Michael), of Concord. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and brother, Kimo J. Mullinax (Christine), of Granite Falls.
