Joel Andrew Huneycutt, 70 years of age, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012 at his home in Locust. Mr. Huneycutt was born January 24, 1942 in Stanly County to the late Roy Andrew Huneycutt and Minnie Hathcock Huneycutt. Joel graduated from NC State University in 1964. He retired as President of Locust Lumber Company in 2009. He has served on the Board of Trustees at Home Savings and Loan for 27 years, Stanly Regional Hospital Board of Trustees for 13 years, NC Hospital Association Board of Trustees, received the NCHA Trustee Merit Award in 2007, served on the Board of Trustees at Wingate University, received the Stanly County Chamber Business Award Citizen of the Year in 2010, and served on Locust City Council. The Town Center Community Room in Locust is named after him. He also served as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Locust. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Monday, with a 30 minute state prior to the service, at First Baptist Church in Locust. Rev. Gordon Huneycutt, Dr. Kinney Wallace and Dr. Dan Phipps will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. At other times, the family will meet at his home. Survivors include his loving wife, Brenda Whitley Huneycutt, of the home. He and Brenda would have been married 50 years in December of 2012. Also surviving are his sons, Eric Andrew and his wife, Sheri of Locust, Gordon Eugene and his wife, Laura of Stanfield, and Ashley Clay and his wife, Jane Ellen of Locust; his brother, Leon Huneycutt and his wife, Donna of Locust; his sister, Cherry Bray and her husband, Rick of Lewisville, NC; grandchildren, Josh and his wife Susan, Andrew, Roxanne, Ellen, Rebekah, and Ross; and his great-grandchild Landon and a great-granddaughter is due in November.
