John Henry Austin, 76, of Concord passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Tucker Hospice House. He was born on October 17, 1934 in Gilford County to the late Marshall T. and Hattie Thompson Austin. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Charles, Melvin, Sanford and Fairley Austin, sisters Myrtle A. Wallace and Thelma A. Hedrick and one daughter Emily Austin Jackson. Mr. Austin had lived in Concord since he was a child and worked at A & P Grocery Stores, Frye’s Bowling Lanes and Phillip Morris. He enjoyed his travels, and also fishing and dancing. He was a member of Royal Oaks Baptist Church. The family meeting place will be at the home. A visitation will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord on Friday, July 22, 2011 from 6 until 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at Royal Oaks Baptist Church in Kannapolis on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 11 AM, with Rev. Leon Smith and Rev. Ralph Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. He is survived by: daughters, Marsha Austin Dickenson and husband Mike and Amy Austin Elwood and husband Delbert; brothers, Wayne and Kenneth Austin; sisters Lorene A. Cook and Zula Gardner; special friend and significant other, Dean Williams of Cornelius; grandchildren, Barrett Elwood of Midland, William Sutton of Concord, Daniel Elwood of Kannapolis, Austin Jackson of Pensacola, Florida and Robert Jackson of Jacksonville, Florida; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Mottzie.
