John Barrier, 94, of Concord, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at home. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord on Friday, May 11, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Gary Morris, will be held in the Hartsell Funeral Home chapel on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Stephens Wesleyan Methodist Church Cemetery. John was born March 18, 1918, to the late Shuford Clyde Barrier and the late Bessie Abigail Faggart Barrier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lucille Allman Barrier; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Barrier; and a granddaughter, Bridget Barrier. Mr. Barrier was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. He was a chief flight engineer on a B29 that flew over the USS Missouri while the U.S. signed the Peace Treaty with Japan. He is survived by two sons, John Henry Barrier and Ray Lynn Barrier and wife, Janet; three daughters, Carrie Sue Moody and husband Maynard, Nancy Phillips and husband John,Kathy Lambert and husband David; grandchildren, Paula Moody Tucker, Shannon Moody, Karen Moody, Jennifer Phillips, Christopher Phillips, Matthew Lambert, David Lee Barrier and Ashley Barrier Wilson; and step-grandchildren, Robin Whitney, Mike Myers., Jessica Conboy, Michelle Clardy, Melissa McDaniels and Sherri Drahun; a sister, Irene Ridenhour of Mt. Pleasant; and five great-grandchildren. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Barrier family.
