John Henry Chandler, 94 years of age, of New London, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. John was born January 27, 1919 in Stanly County to the late Frank Howard Chandler and the late Easter Caroline Mitchell Chandler. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Marie Chandler in 2010, and twelve brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Carol Flack, assisted by Rev. Kevin McCormac, will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 44118 NC 740 Hwy, New London. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. At other times, the family will be meeting at the home of his son, Dwight Chandler, Gurley Road, New London. He is survived by son, John Dwight Chandler and wife, Judy of New London; daughters, Rebecca Cresswell and husband, James,of Albemarle and Irma Almond and husband, Steve, of Albemarle; seven grandchildren, Kristina Stiller (Ritchie), Tonya Bentley(Josh), Bryan Chandler (Sarah), JR Cresswell, Jr (Brooke), John Cresswell (Sarah), Barry Almond (Felica), and Laura Blalock (Brian); and 18 great-grandchildren. He was the oldest member at Bethel United Methodist Church where he was past chairman of the board, president of the United Methodist Men, served as Sunday school teacher, superintendant, MYF leader, and maintained the church yard. John was a member of Woodman of the World, serving as state Woodman trustee and as NC delegate to the National Woodman Meeting in San Diego in 1985. He served in all capacities at Lodge #25 in Albemarle and was also district chaplin and past member of the state fraternal committee.
