John Paul McManus, 78, of Midland, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at his home.
Mr. McManus was born January 6, 1939 in Mecklenburg County to the late Willis Alfred McManus, Sr. and the late Carrie Biggers McManus. He was the youngest of 16 children, and was preceded in death by 14 sibling.
Mr. McManus attended school at Bain in Mint Hill, and was a graduate of East Mecklenburg and Charlotte College. After a short time working in the heating and air condition field he served his country honorably in the U. S. Army. In 1964 he returned to the corporate world and had a long career at Walter Hook Architects & Engineers which later became Freeman White Architects & Engineers. He later joined McCracken & Lopez, P.A. Consulting Engineers. He loved his work and only gave up his heating and air conditioning design after heart bypass surgery. JP was a life time member of ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
Mr. McManus had a love for flying and was the corporate pilot at Freeman White. He also loved gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor. He enjoyed his tractors and lawn mowers and other farm equipment until diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. He drove his John Deere Gator around the property with his oxygen tank strapped on the back until the end!
Mr. McManus was charter member and faithful to his church, United Love Baptist Church, Midland. He designed the first building, served as deacon, and was on building and grounds, cemetery, and various other committees.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017, at United Love Baptist Church, 11487 Flowe's Store Road, Midland. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary and will be officiated by Rev. Marvin Tyson and Rev. Lynn Sasser. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sara Margaret McManus; sister, Libby Stegall of Locust; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Love Baptist Church, Senior Fund, 11487 Flowe's Store Road, Midland, NC 28107.
