John Phillips, Jr

John (Johnny) Albert Phillips, Jr., 79, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010, in Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC. Mr. Phillips was born June 24, 1931, in York County, SC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina P. Phillips; father, John Albert Phillips, Sr.; mother, Ellen Baker Phillips; brother, Bill Phillips; and sister, Ila Porter. John was a veteran of the Navy and served in Korea. He was a diesel mechanic for Commercial Transport in Charlotte and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. The visitation will be Tuesday, 7 – 9 p.m., at Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland. At other times, the family will be at the home of his son, Scott Phillips, 8105 W. Duncan Road, Indian Trail. The funeral will be Wednesday, 2:00, with a 30 minute state, at Hopewell Baptist Church, Monroe, NC, officiated by Rev. Lee Pigg, Rev. Ron Richardson, and Rev. Jim Couick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Betty S. Phillips, of the home; sons, Tim Phillips, Scott Phillips and wife, Lisa, and Mark Phillips; sister, Mary Evans and husband, Chuck, all of Indian Trail; step-son,Tim Steele and wife, Debbie, of Rock Hill, SC; step-daughters, Brenda S. Herholdt and husband, Jan, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Elaine Steele of Rock Hill, SC; brother, Max Phillips and wife, Molly, of Rock Hill; sisters, Lillian Huffstetler and Faye Branham of Rock Hill; thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Church Building Fund, 420 Hopewell Church Road, Monroe, NC 28110. Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland, is serving the Phillips family.
