On Friday, September 12, 2014, John “Papa John” Davis, of Locust, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Davis was born August 19, 1934 in Raleigh, NC to the late C.L. and Johnnie Macy Davis.
John was a graduate of Hugh Morris High School and attended King’s Business School. Mr. Davis worked for Bell South for 34 years until his retirement in 1994. He was very instrumental in the training and installation of the first information system and later the installation of electronic long distance in Charlotte, NC. He was a certified instructor for the quality training system throughout North and South Carolina. One of his greatest joys was training people. When he retired in 1994 John and his wife, Martha, moved to Oak Island, NC. John became very active in the beach life and served as President of the Southport Newcomers Club and Director of the Oak Island Elk’s Club. His greatest passion was spending time with family and friends fishing on the end of Oak Island Pier. In 2005 John and Martha moved back to Locust to spend time with their six children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Called "Papa John" by all who knew him, John loved life. His passions included fishing, gardening, woodworking, and cooking. An accomplished “grill master” he was known far and wide for his Brunswick Stew. He loved cruising tropical islands with his wife Martha and hosting dinners for family and friends. The most important thing in his life was his family.
Those left to cherish his memories include his devoted wife of 57 years, Martha Davis; sons, Kirk Davis (Shari), Greg Davis (Julie), Bart Davis (Debbie), Andy Davis (Angie); daughters, Leigh Ann Davis, Sharri McMillian (Lee); grandchildren, Christy Luckey, Danny Waltman, Matt Davis, Laura Beth Kiker, John McMillian, Hailey and Brayden Davis; and great-grandchildren, Jack Waltman and Averie Kiker.
