Johnny Helms

Johnny Lee Helms "The Family Hero," 72, of Locust, went home to be with The Lord on November 2, 2021.

Johnny was born November 24, 1948 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Vernon and Lula Mae Helms.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Christine and Janie; brothers, Charles, Carl, and Sonny; grandson, Tommy.

The memorial service will be on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 11:00 am at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland.

Johnny was the embodiment of the phrase "a man's man." He always did exactly what was necessary, and what was right, to the best of his knowledge and ability. He voluntarily did two tours of duty in Vietnam in the Army. That warrior spirit was present in the way he protected and provided for his family. Johnny was a very quick study and excelled in various vocations. He was known for his carpentry skills. His favorite job was being the sole gardener at Winghaven Bird Sanctuary in Charlotte, NC.

Johnny's two greatest passions were his grandsons and fishing. So fishing with them was a slice of Heaven on earth for him.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne; sisters, Nancy and Linda; brother, Jimmy; daughter, Michelle; and his grandson, David.

He will be greatly missed.
