Joseph Earl “Tony” Lewis, 91, of New London passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 13, 2018.
Born October 24, 1926 in Bennettsville, S.C., he was the son of the late Whiteford Lafayette Lewis and Betty Sweatt Lewis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Alene Fryar Lewis; two brothers, Burch Lewis and George Lewis, and three sisters, Margaret Lewis Driggers, Mary Lewis, and Zena "Malloy" Lewis McDaniel.
Tony enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. A World War II veteran, he served aboard the U.S.S. Haraden and earned a Purple Heart after surviving a Japanese kamikaze attack on the ship. He worked as a salesman for Foster-Caviness Produce Company in Greensboro and retired to his home at Badin Lake where he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Tony loved fishing, golfing, gardening and in his later years, sewing pillows to give to friends and other seniors.
Survivors include his son, Joseph Earl Lewis Jr. of Monroe; granddaughter, Jessica Ella Lewis and grandson, Daniel Joseph Lewis, both of New London.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stanly County Humane Society, 2049 Badin Rd, Albemarle, NC 28001. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
