Joseph Speight

April 8, 1951 — July 13, 2021

Albemarle

Joseph Boyd Speight, 70, of Albemarle, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Atrium Health University City in Charlotte. Joe was born April 8, 1951 in Stanly County to the late Joseph Gad Speight and the late Ramona Elizabeth Holt Speight. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Donna Speight Stewart.

He is survived by his sons, Jay (Meredith) Speight and Chris (Ashley) Speight; brothers, Tim (Wendy) Speight and Dale (Sherrie) Speight; four grandchildren, William, Olivia, Ruthie, and Zach Speight; nephews and niece, Kyle, Emily and Sammy Speight; brother-in-law, Don Stewart and love of his life Debra Morgan.

A 1969 Graduate of Albemarle Senior High School, Joe went on to obtain his Bachelor's degree from Gardner Webb University and later his Masters Degree from the University of Virginia's Wharton School of Business. Defined by those who knew him as hardworking, honest and caring. He loved his work - first as a teacher, coach and volunteer with the EMS/Fire Rescue team and then as an award-winning State Farm agent for the past 34 years. He saw his work as a way to help others. Joe's desire was to always do what he could to help bring out the best in everyone he met.

Joe loved Stanly County for the support of his community throughout his life. He sought to repay that support through his support of numerous community organizations including, but not limited to, member of the Stanly County Board of Elections, Delta Waterfowl, Special Olympics and numerous Stanly County Youth sports programs.

Joe enjoyed any time spent on, or near, the water. He also loved time with his animals (specifically his dog, Cody and his Tennessee Walking Horses), driving his corvette and taking his Harley Davidson out for a ride. Joe was an accomplished equestrian, an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and was a lifetime member of the NRA.

Despite all the achievements in Joe's life, he was most proud of his sons - Jay and Chris and his grandchildren. He loved them more than anything in the world.
