Joyce Elaine White, 75, of Concord, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012, at Tucker Hospice House. She had been in declining health for several months. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord on Friday, January 20, 2012, from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be followed by a memorial service in the chapel at 2:00 p.m., with Dr. Glenn Myers of Epworth United Methodist Church officiating. Ms. White was born on February 25, 1936, to the late Vena Garmon White and McCamey Bost White. Joyce was educated and at Bethel High School for 10 years, then moved to Concord where she graduated from Hartsell High School in 1954. While at Hartsell and Bethel she was very active in sports, music and many other activities. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Sports Medal and also the Activities Medal. She received honors for her scholastic achievements. She retired from Allstate Ins. Co. as a manager in 1997. She took advantage of various training courses and also college level courses that earned her a degree in insurance through the Insurance Institute of America, with honors. She traveled to various large cities and states to either train or to train others. She was awarded the “Good Hands” award by her fellow managers. In January 2002, she activated her real estate license and again became employed with DR Horton/Torrey Builders in Charlotte. She was assigned to the Caldwell Station sub division and worked as office manager, including selling real estate. Joyce was very active in her community and church. She was the coordinator for the Salvation Army night shelter, scheduling persons to fill spots at the shelter, preparing meals and keeping records. She was also a member of the auxiliary for the Salvation Army in Concord and in Charlotte. She was a member of the Cabarrus Christian Women’s Group for many years. You could also see her visiting nursing homes to bring cheer with little bud vases of silk flowers. This brought smiles to all the faces of those she ministered to. Her greatest pleasure was to give to those who were less fortunate. Joyce was a member of Epworth UMC since 1978 and was very active in all areas: Sunday school teacher, coordinator of night shelter, crop walk coordinator, coordinator of pictorial director, member of Houlk-Reading Circle of Women who did many worthwhile projects to help others. Also, she was a member of the Chancel Choir during her membership there, except for during periods of illness. She is survived by twin sisters, Carolyn W. Rabon and Betty W. Pope of Concord; a nephew, Jerry Wayne White and a niece, Jodi Gentry Pope of China Grove. She was preceded in death by a sister; Phyllis Ann White; a brother, McCamey Bost White, Jr.; and a special friend, Gabe Hartsell.
