Judy Carter Hearne of Hampstead, NC, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020 at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington, NC, after an extended illness.
Judy was born in Albemarle, NC, on July 2, 1948 to the late Mitchell and Maxine Burleson Carter. She grew up in the Endy community and was graduated from West Stanly High School in 1966. She did her undergraduate study at Wingate College and Western Carolina University. She attained her Master of Education degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She taught school in Gaston and Stanly Counties for over twenty years and was an administrator for Johnston County Schools for ten years. She was a dedicated professional both in the classroom and as an administrator. Judy loved her students, and they loved her. She also had the respect of her colleagues.
Upon retirement from Johnston County, Judy and her husband, Lyndell (Lyn) Smith Hearne, moved to Hampstead where they lived on the intracoastal waterway. They enjoyed many hours boating on the water and traveling to all fifty states and five continents. They also sailed on fifteen cruises. Judy kept detailed journals of each trip which provided anyone who read them vicarious travel experiences. Her last trip was a Christmas Cruise in 2019 on which she and Lyn celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on December 20 with four other family members. She was an avid student of history, especially ancient history. Before going on any trip, she always researched the history of the area she would be visiting. In addition, she daily watched the History Channel on television.
Judy and Lyn were members of Wesleyan Methodist Church in Scott’s Hill. She taught adult Sunday school classes in most of the churches she attended over the years.
In addition to her husband Lyn, Judy is survived by her brother Mickey Carter and sister-in-law Judy, nephews Christopher and Matthew Carter, and a niece Amy Carter Atkins.
