Julia Barger

March 9, 1927 — July 4, 2013

Julia Ann Hunt Barger, age 86, of Albemarle, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle on Saturday, July 6 from 6 pm until 8 pm. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Jim Yow, will be held at Central United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 2 pm. Burial will be at a later date at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury. Julia was born March 9, 1927 to the late Claude Bernice Hunt and Ethel Veasey Hunt in Durham, NC. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Charles T Barger Jr. (Charlie). She is survived by two sons, Chuck Barger of Charlotte and Mark Barger and wife, Kathy, of Greenville, NC; a daughter, Cathy Shoemaker, and husband, David, of Chapel Hill, NC; four grandchildren, Tyler Shoemaker, Meredith Shoemaker, Andrew Barger, and Julia Barger. As a child Julie moved to Salisbury, with her parents and three younger brothers, Claude, Ed, and Bobby Hunt. She graduated from Boyden High School and attended Pfeiffer and Catawaba Colleges, graduating in 1947. Julia and Charlie were married in 1949 and later moved to Albemarle where it was their home for the next sixty-four years. She was an elementary school teacher and reading specialist for twenty-four years working mostly for the Albemarle City Schools. She was beloved and respected by both students and colleagues. An active member of Central United Methodist Church, Julia taught Sunday School and served on numerous boards and committees, including leadership in the UMW. One of her favorite activities was helping to organize the annual church yard sale, where she bought as many “treasures” as she contributed. Julia led a full life and was always in motion. She could often be seen walking in the Forest Hills neighborhood and was known for her breezy conversational skills and easy laughter. She also enjoyed activities with the Senior Center and garden, book, and bridge clubs. Julia was extremely patriotic and so it is fitting that her last day of life on earth was July 4th. Julia will be remembered by her family, ex-students, and friends for her strong Christian faith, her love of people, and her pleasant and always optimistic outlook on life. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 172 N. Second St., Albemarle, NC 28001 or to the charity of one's choice. Hartsell Funeral Home is serving the Barger family.
