Julia Mae Williams McWhirter, 81 years of age, of Mint Hill, passed away at Hospice of Union County on Saturday, June 15, 2013, while surrounded by her loving and caring family. Mrs. McWhirter was born March 14, 1932 in Mecklenburg County to the late Elam Haywood Williams and the late Maggie Helms Williams. She was also preceded in death by her high school sweetheart that became her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Boyd Franklin McWhirter; two sisters, Elizabeth Ross and Doris Pate; and three brothers, Alvah, Douglas and Bobby Williams. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Benton and husband Yates of Charlotte; three sons, Dale McWhirter and wife Cathey of Wingate, Jerry McWhirter of Myrtle Beach, Roger McWhirter and wife Margaret of Mint Hill; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Edith McWhirter of Mint Hill; brother, Kenneth Williams and wife Ida of Charlotte; and two sister-in-laws, Helen Williams and Bea Williams. Mrs. McWhirter was a lifetime resident of Mecklenburg County. She worked at Belks Department Store and in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Cafeteria for many years. She loved to cook and spend time with her family. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 PM on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Dulin's Grove Advent Christian Church. The funeral service to celebrate her life will be in the church sanctuary at 2 PM, with Rev. Matt Broadway officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. At other times, the family will be meeting at her home.
