Kathryn Moderow
May 22, 1934 — December 26, 2016
Kathryn Matilda (Lorch) Moderow, 82, died Monday, December 26, 2016 at Trinity Oaks Assisted Living in Salisbury. Although Kathryn struggled with her health for a number of years, the recent loss of her husband of 60 years, Robert, may have broken her already ailing heart.
She leaves behind her daughter Lynn (Medhat) Takla; her son Kevin (Angela) Moderow; grandchildren Andrew, Jack and Julia Takla, Ryan and Erin Moderow; numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Robert (late Laverne) and Charles (late Janiece) and sister Charlotte (late William) Neumann.
Kathryn was born in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Emma (Voss) Lorch on May 22, 1934, the very youngest of four children. After graduating from Kelvyn Park High School where she was an active member of the art club, drama club and swim team, she eventually took a job at Illinois Tool Works where she met the love of her life, Robert (‘Bob’). Their first date was to a Chicago White Sox game which was noteworthy since Kathryn was a ‘north sider’ or Cubs fan. They married September 22, 1956 and enjoyed raising their 2 children and several Siberian Husky ‘children’. For over 60 years they spent their time together traveling with family and friends, working in the garden, fishing in Wisconsin and Minnesota, cheering for the White Sox, watching football, enjoying gin martinis on the rocks and welcoming each of their five grandchildren. Kathryn was especially fond of baking, reading, walking, gardening, bird watching and the Green Bay Packers.
She was active as a volunteer for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Glenview, Illinois; Mended Hearts (of both Chicago and Cabarrus County); Des Plaines Art Guild; Rand Park Dog Training Club; Cabarrus Meals on Wheels; Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County and Calvary Lutheran Church of Concord.
The family wishes to extend their many thanks to the staff of Trinity Oaks Assisted Living for their compassionate and loving care of Kathryn over the last year and a half.
Memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association at www.heart.org . Twice being the recipient of an artificial heart valve, in 1978 and 2003, Kathryn was always grateful for the advances made in modern medicine especially as related to heart and valvular heart disease.
We draw comfort knowing that ‘Grandma’ and ‘Papa’ are together both in our hearts and in heaven once again.
Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Moderow family.
