Kay Newton

December 5, 1936 — September 16, 2021

Kay Hope Love Newton, 84 years of age, of Concord, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 16, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

Kay was born December 5, 1936 in Concord, North Carolina to the late Woodrow Wilson Love and Cora Alice Little.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Sergeant Major Wylie Hoyle Newton; daughter, Donna Faye Styers; grandson, Jonah Lee Gray; and sister, Martha Ann Perry.

She was a graduate of Concord High School who attended Evans College of Commerce in Concord to learn administrative skills and ECPI in Charlotte to learn computer programming. Kay worked at Kerr Bleachery where she was trained in accounting principles. Then, she went on to work for Speizman Industries, first as a computer punch card operator, and later as the office manager and accountant, retiring from Speizman after several decades of dedicated service. Kay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and agent of God’s love on earth, ceaselessly demonstrating, without any judgment, that love is a persistent action, not just a feeling. Kay was a lifelong member of Ann Street UMC and a devoted member of United Methodist Women. She also was an avid researcher of her family history and genealogy. A lover of nature, Kay cherished wildflowers and birds, and she adored recounting memories of her and Wyle’s wonderful adventures together.

She is survived by sons, Phillip Russell Gray and wife Donna, Bruce Morrison Gray and partner Erica Penley, and Wylie Hoyle Newton Jr.; daughter, Kelly Lucette Newton; sisters, Delette Bost and Husband Emmett, and Betsy Love and wife Sandra Kirkland; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gray, Adrian Griffin, Audra Griffin, Amanda Morgan and husband Eddie, Jennifer Cassell and husband Robert, Jeremy Hagee, and Mandy Hagee and husband Ian Harper; great-grandchildren, Hannah Gray, Olivia Graves, Logan Cerdas-Gray, Liam Cerdas-Gray, Dylan Morgan, Sam Morgan, James Lomax II, Maddie Griffin, Kolby Gray, Meridian Harper, and Revel Harper; niece, Billinda Newton; and nephew, William Perry III.

The funeral service will begin at 1:30 PM on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Ann Street UMC, officiated by Rev. Randy Wall and Rev. Merrill Perkins. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. The family requests that all attendees wear a properly fitting mask indoors at the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please consider memorials to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Cabarrus County, or the progressive cause of your choice.
