Kenneth Mann “Bud” Griffin, 86, of Locust, NC, passed away Monday, February 28, 2011, at his home. Mr. Griffin was born August 14, 1924, in Rutherford County. He was preceded in death by his father, Myers Bert Griffin; mother, Martha Jane Mann Griffin; brothers, Tom, Bert, Harry, Richard, and David; and sister, Mary Griffin Lander. Kenneth joined the army after high school. He served in WWII, 101st Airborne, 327 Glider Division, a paratrooper and scout, served in the Normandy D-day invasion and was a glider co-pilot in the invasion of Holland. He received several medals including two bronze stars. He enjoyed flying, dancing and working with his church. He loved his God, family and church. He was a mason in the 742 Masonic Lodge, an honor guard, a member of the VFW, and a volunteer fireman in Mint Hill. He worked for Southern Bell for 36 years. The visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, at Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland. The funeral will be 11:00, Thursday, at Locust Presbyterian Church, Locust, officiated by Rev. Rick Hoffarth. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Katheryn Oneil Massey Griffin, of the home; daughters, Katheryn Moorefield and husband, Lynn, of Lexington, NC, and Marilyn DeVido and husband, Bruce, of Waxhaw; NC; granddaughters, Katie Aliff of Locust and Morgan Overman of McAdenville; great-grandson, Mason Hatley; step granddaughter, Andi Watkins, of Winston Salem; step grandson, Brant Moorefield, of New York; step great-granddaughter, Cindy Watkins, of Winston Salem; sister-in-law Lee Griffin, of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
