Larry Paul Freeman,79, of Lenoir, NC passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at
Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir.
Larry Freeman was born May 17, 1944 in Concord, NC to the late William Harrison Freeman and Rosalie
McLester Freeman. He graduated from Concord High School prior to joining the Navy. Larry served in
the Navy for 8 years, serving on nuclear submarines. For several years, Larry worked at the General
Dynamics plant in Connecticut (for the US Navy) training new operators of nuclear reactors where they
were built. After the Navy, Larry worked in sales of automated systems and later electrical switches and
supplies.
Larry loved music, both listening to and playing music. One of his first purchases after leaving the Navy
was an organ. Growing up, Larry had played the clarinet and he easily picked up playing the organ.
In the late 70s, Larry obtained his commercial pilot license for small engine & multiengine land
instrument airplane. He went on to earn his instructor’s license and spent many weekends teaching
flying lessons at the Wilgrove Airport in east Charlotte, NC.
Larry was an avid hiker and backpacker throughout most of his life. His love of the Wilson Creek area and
the Mortimer campground is what led him to settle in the Lenoir area when he retired. Larry loved to
take church groups and friends on backpacking trips and show them the areas of NC that he treasured.
In later years, Larry enjoyed making his own wine. He was a perfectionist creating batches of wine from
wine kits and tweaking them to his liking. Larry loved to share his wine with friends and always labeled
the wine with pictures of his grand-dogs and grand-cats.
After retiring, Larry volunteered at both the Senior Center in Concord, NC and the Senior Center in
Lenoir, NC as a tax preparer. He spent many years helping seniors get their tax forms completed and kept
all the computers cleaned up and updated.
Most of all, Larry was a great conversationalist. He loved to talk to people with differing opinions and get
their insight. Larry studied many different topics and could fix ANYTHING and understood how
everything mechanical worked.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Chris Quagliato and daughter -in-law, Ann Quagliato of Charlotte, NC, his
son, Bill Freeman of Charlotte, NC and his sister, Alice Freeman Allred of Concord, NC. His also survived
by his nieces Tammy Atkinson (Todd), Candy Doby (Travis) and their families.
