Lawrence Blackwelder

Mr. Lawrence James Blackwelder, of 316 Pitts School Road, Concord, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Caremoor Retirement Center in Kannapolis. He was born on February 9, 1921 in Cabarrus County to the late Albert and Cora Blackwelder. He was educated in the Cabarrus County Schools. He married Gladys Smith Blackwelder in 1940. Lawrence was a long time and dedicated member of Pitts Baptist Church. After working many years at Delph Hardware in Charlotte, Lawrence retired only to find great joy giving his time working at Pitts where he loved to mow grass, work in the flowers and make anything needed for the church or the daycare. He loved his church and loved to give his time in its service. At Pitts he served as a deacon and was administrator of the cemetery. A visitation will be held at Pitts Baptist Church on Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 1:00 until 2:00 pm. Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm with Rev. Scott Davis officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Lawrence loved his family greatly. He is preceeded in death by his wife, Gladys Smith Blackwelder, who passed away in November of 2007; son, Lawrence Eugene Blackwelder; brothers, Floyd, Fred, June, and Wick Blackwelder; sister, Faye Biggers. Left to cherish his memory are, his daughter, Deborah Blackwelder Glover; granddaughter, Kristie Glover; two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Jesse McDaniel; sisters, Leona Pressley and Betty B. Cranford; as well as many nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pitts Baptist Church Building Fund, 140 Pitts School Road NW, Concord, NC 28027 or to Hospice and Palliative Care, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081. The family would also like to express their gratitude to the staff at Caremoor Retirement Center and Hospice for the loving care given to Lawrence.
