Leonard James Howell, 83, of Locust, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast in Concord.
Leonard was born August 31, 1933 in Oakboro to the late Artus Eldridge Howell and the late Nezzie Hartsell Howell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Wadene Poplin; and brother, Wallace Howell.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Carolina Presbyterian Church, 406 Renee Ford Rd., Locust officiated by Rev. David Yoran and Rev. Bruce League. Military honors will be conducted by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter 12 and the NC National Guard Honor Guard. At other times, the family will be gathering at the home.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Kay Lewis Little Howell of the home; daughters, Mandi Summers and husband, Wade of Locust, Beth Gautier of Cameron; grandchildren, Brittney Speights and husband Travis of Oakboro, Meredith Brook Summers of Locust, Connor Jones and wife, Christy of Lemon Springs; brother, Cecil Howell and wife, Lorraine of Concord; sister, Barbara Loftin and husband, Johnny of Arden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leonard was a proud graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He honorably served his country as a Navigator Captain in the United States Air Force. Leonard worked as the purchasing manager for Belk Store Services for 30 years, and he and his wife, Kay, were also previous owners and operators of Gifts and Wraps in Locust. Leonard was an active member of the West Stanly Lion's Club, and was awarded the Melvin Jones Award, Jack Stickley Award, and Lion of the Year Award. He was an original founding member of the Jaycee Chapter of Locust. He was also a faithful member of Carolina Presbyterian Church and served on the Locust City Council for many years. Leonard was a loving and devoted husband, father, Papaw, brother, and friend. He cherished his family and loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed golf, spending time at Hilton Head Island, and watching Carolina play.
