Lieutenant Colonel, Arthur Joseph Yarzumbeck, 65, of Concord, NC, passed peacefully at his home on September 12, 2012 surrounded by his loving family following a short illness of pancreatic cancer. He was born on November 15, 1946 in Windber, PA to the late Joseph F. and Sophia Fluder Yarzumbeck. Arthur graduated from Windber Area High School in 1964. He received a Bachelor of Science in 1969, and a Masters of Science in 1982, both in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University. Retired from the US Army, Arthur’s meritorious service included an assignment to The 18th Airborne Corps Artillery at Fort Bragg as a paratrooper and chemical officer. He later served in Operation Desert Storm for which he was awarded The Bronze Star for having coordinated over 80 combat-supportive construction projects in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq, including heliports, aviation and communications facilities, ammunition supply points, bridges, roads, and prisoner internment facilities. Arthur also worked for IBM and retired as the Director of Asian Operations based in Hong Kong. His responsibilities included constructing, staffing and operating IBM’s first manufacturing facility in the Republic of China. For the past three years Arthur has worked as a Professor of Chemistry at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in NC. He enjoyed reading, studying history, and spending time with his family. Arthur is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Margaret Kowal Yarzumbeck of Concord, NC, daughters, Christina Morgan, wife of Andrew, of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Lisa Heintz, wife of Jared, of Prince Frederick, MD, son Bradley Arthur of Charlotte, NC, two brothers, Chester and John Fluder of Windber, PA, four grandchildren, Alyssa, Brynn, Maxim, and Britton, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brother Edward Fluder, of Windber PA and his sister, Laurine Russell, of Greenwich, CT. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord, NC on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The family will receive friends 2 PM to 4 PM at Kisiel Funeral Home in Windbar, PA on Monday afternoon, September 17, 2012; and Monday evening from 7 PM to 9 PM.
