Lula Belle “Lukie” Dorton Cochran, 86, of Concord, passed away on May 13, 2016 at Five Oaks Manor.

Mrs. Cochran was born March 2, 1930, in Concord, to the late Robert L. Dorton and Ila Mae Clay Dorton. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Daniel M. Cochran, and her three sisters, Phyllis Arrowood, Minnie Hinson and Mary Ella Porter.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 16, 2016 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at the Roberta United Methodist Church Family Center. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 pm. The Rev. Jim Church will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a 1948 graduate of W.R. Odell High School where she served as senior class president. Mrs. Cochran worked at Shepherd’s Jewelry Store in Concord after high school. She was employed in textiles at Hugh Grey and Kayser-Roth Hosiery Mills for nineteen years as a seamstress and later as a supervisor. In 1971 she joined the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services as an Aide for Dependent Children (AFDC) caseworker. She retired in 1992 after twenty and a half years of service at Social Services.

Mrs. Cochran was a lifelong member of Roberta United Methodist Church and the Carl Williams Sunday School Class. She served in various roles over the years and received the church’s Life Achievement Award in 2011.

Mrs. Cochran was a member of the Red Hats and the Mama’s and Papa’s Club for many years. She and her husband enjoyed dancing and entertaining family and friends. Mrs. Cochran loved crafts, needlepoint, and reading. A skilled baker, she took great pride in her pecan and damson pies.

Survivors include her sons, Colby Cochran of Salisbury and Danny Cochran of the home; grandson Kevin Cochran; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend Elvie Lowder of Five Oaks Manor. The family extends special thanks and appreciation to the staff of Five Oaks Manor and to Dr. Geoffrey Rackoff and staff at Carolina Internal Medicine for the loving care given to Mrs. Cochran.
