Randel, as he was known to his family, was born Feb. 23, 1937 to the late Luther and Ollie Adams Coffey in Louellen, KY, a small coal mining town, in Harlan County.
Randel took pride in his service with the US Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga, CV-14, as a radio operator. His favorite quote about serving in the military was from a speech from then President Kennedy to cadets at the US Naval Academy given in August of 1963 "...any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy'." After his tour at sea, he was stationed with Guided Missile Group Two at Naval Air Station, Chincoteague, VA.
He married his loving wife, Barbara, and they began their 60 year life journey together. After his military service, Randel worked for IBM in Lexington, KY and transferred to IBM in Charlotte, NC in 1980, where he retired as a Systems Analyst in 1994.
He was a member of Coldwater Baptist Church in Concord, NC and enjoyed gardening and giving to others.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Agee Coffey, of Concord, NC; sons, Randel Jerald and wife, Patti Whittemore Coffey, of Berea, KY, David Franklin and wife, Teresa Pepper Coffey, of Concord, NC and Brian Keith Coffey of Monroe, NC; grandson, Travis Lincoln Coffey of Berea, KY; sisters, Sarah Coffey Poff of Big Hill, KY and Gaye Coffey Seals of Berea, KY; along with 15 nieces and nephews.
